First Day of School

As soon as I had my own children, I anticipated their first days of school.  Each fall, I get a great high and excitement over the start of school.  I love to greet new students and see them grow throughout the year and I couldn’t wait to be on the other side and nurture my own kids from home as they go through school.  However, I didn’t even think of the very first day and how hard it would be…for me!   It doesn’t matter if it’s preschool or kindergarten, Mac is starting school all day.  His first time of his life not being with Nicki or me.  I think I had glamorized the first day, but as it drew closer, I began to get more and more nervous for Mac.  Will he cry?  Will he miss me?  Will he think about going home all day (these are all of the feelings I had in fifth grade going back to school from homeschooling!)?  Will he get in trouble the first day?  What will he do for the two hour nap time since he doesn’t nap?  I just had no idea.  I know academically and socially he’s ready for school.  He needs a challenge.  But I wasn’t sure emotionally how he would do.   Again, you can see why I drive Shannon nuts.  These are the thoughts that have consumed me for a month now.

So anyway, off we went this morning.

Standing next to his name in the hall outside his classroom!

He went right in and hung up his backpack like he was asked.

So Patrick and I went home and I fretted some more throughout the extremely long day without him.  When the time finally came to go get him, here is where I found him:

Happily playing in a center, just fine without Mom. 🙂  Guess he’ll be just fine.

    Oh Michele,
Both of your boys are so cute! Did you get a chance to talk with Mac’s teacher after school? Aren’t you glad he handled it so well? That’s cause you’re a good mom.
I had an email from our Title 1 aide from last year–She said she accepted a job at Judah–Maybe first grade-I’m not sure. Her name is Jamie Giliam.
Enjoy your last couple of “kid free” weeks.
